The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 people were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
