The final Test of the series at the SCG gets underway on Sunday, 4 January. The visitors have been without strike bowlers one seamer due to knee trouble and another paceman because of a side injury on the current trip. Matthew Fisher was added to the party to provide backup. Atkinson struggled in the opening two Tests, claiming a mere three wickets. He was dropped of the third Test, before being recalled for the Boxing Day match to fill the void. Atkinson showed better form in Melbourne, taking two wickets during the host's first knock, then making 28 while batting being one of only three England players to get into double digits. After bowling one over in Australia's second innings, he came back on Saturday morning and had nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind. Unfortunately, at the end of his spell, he bowled a change of pace to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring. The English bowler returned to the side for the Melbourne match after being left out the previous Test.
