The Russian leader has pledged to take swift countermeasures against what he termed the “increasing military buildup across Europe”, while dismissing Western anxieties that Russia plans to strike Nato as “fabrication”.

The President’s Sochi Speech

During a wide-ranging speech in the Russian city of Sochi on Thursday, the Russian president stated: “Our attention is fixed on the escalating militarisation of Europe … We simply cannot ignore what is happening. We have no right to do so for reasons of our own security.”

“I think no one doubts that Russia’s countermeasures will not be long in coming,” he added, during the Valdai plenary session, a regular assembly of diplomats and specialists where Putin often sets out his views on global affairs.

Leaders’ Gathering Amid Increased Strain

These comments came as 45 European leaders assembled in the Danish capital for a meeting aimed at increasing backing for the Ukrainian government and speeding up military initiatives intended to ensure the region is equipped to counter Russian aggression.

The meeting followed a period of instability in which several European countries reported unauthorized flights by Russian aircraft, heightening anxieties that Russia was probing the alliance’s determination.

The Russian Leader’s Friendly Approach Toward Trump

Despite his warnings to Europe, the Russian president struck a conciliatory note toward Donald Trump, despite the US leader’s recent disparaging remarks about him.

As part of an bid to win back Trump’s favour, he lavished praise on him, asserting that “under Trump’s leadership, the war in Ukraine could have been prevented” – a argument the US president has often used himself in his addresses.

The Kremlin and Kyiv have spent an extended period trying to court Trump over the war in Ukraine, as the US leader has repeatedly shifted his stance.

Lately, Ukraine appeared to gain the upper hand, with Trump expressing disappointment in the Russian president for extending the conflict and dismissing Russia’s economy and military as a “paper tiger”.

Change in American Stance

As per sources, the US president recently approved US intelligence agencies and the Pentagon to help Kyiv carry out attacks within Russia’s borders – a move which would amount to a significant shift in American strategy under his guidance.

The Ukrainian president has also lobbied American authorities for long-range missile systems and other American-designed arms capable of hitting targets up to 800 kilometers away.

Moscow’s Reply to Remarks

As on previous occasions when challenged by Trump, Putin dismissed it, apparently relying on the US leader to reverse his position.

He described Trump as a “agreeable discussant” who knows “how to listen” and said Moscow was seeking a “full-scale restoration” of relations with the US, praising Trump’s administration for its “frankness and transparency”.

Addressing Trump’s critical description, Putin implied the statement might have been ironic, remarking: “If we are comfortable being at war with the whole Nato bloc, but we’re a paper tiger, then what is Nato?”

War in Gaza

The Russian leader also supported the US initiative to conclude hostilities in the region, noting that former UK prime minister Tony Blair – likely to have a major part in the effort – could “help achieve progress”.

Putin then went off topic to reminisce about how he once spent the night at the former PM’s residence and the two had coffee together the next morning “while still in sleepwear”.

Stronger Language on European Leadership

His language was notably harsher when it came to the European continent, with most of Putin’s ire directed at the region, accusing “EU officials” for blocking negotiations in Ukraine and “creating panic” in the region.

He declared: “According to them, conflict with Russia is imminent. This absurd idea is repeated constantly … Do they actually think Moscow will assault Nato? If they do, it shows sheer incompetence, since the notion is unbelievable, or else they are being deliberately misleading.”

Tanker Incident

Putin also condemned France’s arrest this week of the personnel on a Russian-affiliated vessel which was suspected of serving as a base for unmanned aircraft that caused disruptions in Denmark last week.

He asserted: “In neutral seas, the ship was captured unjustly. Such actions are piratical.”

Ongoing Hostilities

Regarding the Ukraine conflict, there was little indication that the Russian leader was seeking dialogue or moderating his ambitious aim of forcing Kyiv’s capitulation.

Despite Russia’s modest recent progress, he claimed that his troops were “confidently advancing” along the complete battle zone.

He also stated that the Ukrainian side was suffering far greater losses than Russia – although western estimates put Moscow’s losses at close to a 1,000,000, higher than Ukraine’s.

“Considering the Ukrainian casualties, Kyiv should carefully consider starting negotiations,” Putin said.

Ukrainian Leader’s Call

Participating in European leaders in Copenhagen, Zelenskyy said Moscow was “escalating its harmful activities” and called on EU nations to show the “determination” to respond promptly.

The Ukrainian president stated: “We see clearly that only joint action and united efforts can guarantee real security. No country should be left alone against this threat.” He called on Europe to “increase the pressure, and increase the pressure now, so that Russia is forced to end the war and change its policy”.
