The Munich airport has cancelled more than a dozen aircraft departures following drones were spotted close to its airspace.

No fewer than 17 aircraft were halted in the city, disrupting close to three thousand passengers.

Munich airport said it redirected a more fifteen aircraft to nearby cities.

No quick verification was available of where the drones had come from. Several airports in Europe have shut down in the last couple of weeks due to unknown drones.

Flight controllers diverted aircraft that were scheduled to arrive in Munich to Frankfurt.

With nightfall, no information on the kind, scale or provenance of the drones was confirmed, a Federal Police representative told one media outlet. The unmanned aerial vehicles were initially spotted at 21:30 in the local timezone (7:30 PM GMT), and then once more an hour later, authorities stated.

Current drone sightings in the European Union prompted a high-level meeting in the Danish capital recently.

Twenty from Russia drones flew into Poland and Russian MiG-31 jets breached Estonian skies in different recent incidents.

Copenhagen and Oslo's airfields were obliged to halt operations following unidentified unmanned aircraft were spotted near airport and military flight zones.

The Russian government has disputed any involvement, while Danish officials state there was lack of proof Russia was connected.

Speaking at a summit in the Black Sea tourist destination of the city, Russian President Putin laughed off suggestions he ordered drones to Danish airspace.

"I will not repeat it. I won't do it again - not to France or the Danes or that city" Putin remarked.

Many travelers were stuck at the airport through the night.

"Temporary beds were set up, and blankets, drinks, and light food were provided the airport reported.

The city is currently hosting the yearly Oktoberfest festival, which is due to end on the fifth of October. The event attracts over six million people attendees a year, according to the official website.
