Complex Picture for Specific Crimes

While foreign nationals accounted for a greater share of individuals found guilty for theft and sexual violations over the past decade, experts advised that a data gap regarding the age and gender of convicts added layers of nuance and presented challenges to make clear assertions.

Data Analysis

During the month of June, approximately one in eight of the prison population were foreign citizens, omitting people with unlisted nationality, based on data from a academic immigration analysis unit. In contrast, the immigrant community in these two nations was nearly seventeen percent in the most recent census year, as per the population count.

The situation was more nuanced for specific offences such as sexual offences, where non-citizens were more prevalent among those warned or found guilty, at fifteen percent, but underrepresented in the jailed cohort, accounting for ten percent.

A researcher at the migration observatory stated: “There may be differences in rates of criminality between UK nationals and overseas individuals, but we can’t pinpoint the precise reasons. A significant portion will be accounted for by differences in personal characteristics and economic background.”
