🔗 Share this article A Veteran Game Director's New Game That Seems Unfamiliar Yet Expands Upon Familiar Concepts. Bruce Straley responsible for The Last of Us is crafting his return into game development. The upcoming game, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the first release from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, a project that expands the ideas of his past achievements centered around dynamic AI partners. An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey Revealed at a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a character-puzzle-platformer. The game follows a seasoned spellcaster, a protagonist who defies traditional video game heroics. The core idea originated in a desire to deconstruct what it means to be a protagonist. "Consider a scenario where you lacked the sword or shield? What if you were somehow encumbered? What if you're an elderly woman?" posed the creative lead. "The concept seemed deeply interesting to explore what makes a hero. Heroism involves fighting your way through obstacles, but it’s also about selflessness and unwavering will." A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work Although this project seems unfamiliar visually, its groundbreaking system evolves from of the work seen in The Last of Us. This whole endeavor flowed from one pivotal question: "How could one create Ellie truly living and learning to the player?" The companion creature in the game is far from a scripted follower. Straley describes it as a curious child which observes and responds with evolving behaviors. First, it exhibits curiosity, potentially leading to unexpected chaos. Subsequently, it tries to copy what it sees. In the end, it watches and learns comprehending the world's rules. For example: If the creature sees Gertie slot a puzzle piece, it grasps the physical act but not the reason. It will then begin grabbing nearby items to see where they go, mimicking the behavior. True comprehension arrives only when it accidentally solves a puzzle itself, forming an organic connection. Crafting Your Own Unique Story This complex system seeks to generate individualized narrative moments. The creative lead highlights that this project will be a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience rather than a scripted, action-heavy path. "Whenever I attempted traditional three-act structure within this framework, the magic dissipated," he stated. "The liveliness in this partnership lies in the fact that each individual player are going to have unique moments and stories compared to my playthrough." This focus on player-defined experiences, the new title represents simultaneously a refinement and a drastic departure from Straley's iconic past work. The project is presently targeting PC platforms.
